Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison, McBurney Disability Resource Center (the campus disability services office for students) is hiring an ASL hearing interpreter with experience in postsecondary and healthcare interpreting experience for this unique opportunity. You would be providing ASL interpretation for a student attending medical school in Fall 2024-May 2028. Interpreting will happen within the UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Heath's program, consisting of phases including: course work and shadowing experience; four, 12-week clinical rotations, with rotation(s) likely outside of the greater Madison area; varying clinical experience dependent on student preference.

As a designated American Sign Language (ASL) hearing interpreter you would be working with a student attending medical school. Interpreting will happen in classes, labs, discussions, study and affinity groups, multiple clinical rotations, and additional settings as needed. This position is part of a team of highly qualified ASL interpreters, applying your experience and knowledge as a medical and postsecondary interpreter. When not actively interpreting, you would be preparing for interpreting assignments and working with the team to ensure access and provide consistency of services. The student and designated sign language interpreters will collaborate, communicate, and develop best practice for each unique situation. You will have the support of the larger campus Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services team and an onsite supervisor to navigate logistical issues. Join our team and be part of this exciting opportunity!

Responsibilities:

Provides American Sign Language or Signed English interpretation services for deaf and hearing campus community members for advanced, complex, or varied interactions at the institution, including but not limited to academic situations, employment meetings, and institutional events.
  • 20% Prepares for interpreting requests by utilizing provided preparation materials, researching outside sources, and communicating with colleagues
  • 65% Interprets or transliterates for advanced or technically complex academic content or institutional events that include sensitive or high impact requests utilizing ethical analysis to determine optimal options in interpreting situations
  • 5% Provides consultation and answers questions regarding best practices for interpreting and working with deaf individuals for the University community
  • 10% Work collaboratively with the team of interpreters. Share information, communicate schedule changes, prepare information for the team.

Qualifications:

Required:
Minimum three years of experience as an ASL interpreter in postsecondary settings.
Ability to effectively, professionally, and accurately convey academic concepts in both American Sign Language and English.
Current Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Certification and/or National Association of the Deaf Certification and/or equivalent certification.
Current or eligible Wisconsin Sign Language Interpreter-Advanced Hearing State License. License information: https://dsps.wi.gov/Pages/Professions/SignLanguageInterpreter/AdvancedHearing.aspx 
 
Preferred:
Minimum two years of experience as ASL interpreter in healthcare settings.
Certificate of completion or equivalent from an accredited interpreter training program is strongly preferred, though relevant experience may be considered.
Knowledge of broad accommodation options and services for deaf learners.
Ability to set up and utilize technology, i.e., assistive listening devices, microphones, web conferencing tools.
Ability to thrive in a dynamic and collaborative work environment.
Flexibility to include evenings and weekend work.

Work Schedule:

Regular business hours, flexibility to work on occasional evenings and weekend depending on the student needs and department needs. This position qualifies for shift differentials (between 6:00 pm-6:00 am/weekends).

Pay is commensurate with certification, education, and experience. In this University Staff position, interpreters are paid for their interpreting time, preparation time and consultative time for a total of 40 hours per at the hourly rate. This position also qualifies for shift differentials (between 6:00 pm-6:00 am), and compensation time or overtime for hours over 40 in a week. The McBurney Disability Resource Center is the office for students with disabilities and classroom accommodations on the UW-Madison campus.
