Job Summary:

The Division of Information Technology Portfolio & Project Management Office (PPMO) is seeking a Sr. IT Project Manager to assist the Office of Data, Academic Planning, and Institutional Research (DAPIR) in a technical transformation of the UW-Madison's data environment. DAPIR includes Academic Planning, Institutional Research & Decision Support, Data Governance, and Enterprise Data Management. Our responsibilities include coordinating information gathering and dissemination to a variety of audiences for a variety of purposes. One of our goals is to create ways of doing this that are accurate, efficient, and result in information that drives new insights and business value. 

 

The ideal Sr. IT Project Manager is responsible for the management of large, complex, and highly visible information technology and data projects with UW-Madison. This role will assemble and motivate project teams, manage communications and relationships with key stakeholders, capture and manage project risks, issues, decisions, and budget. The Sr. IT Project Manager will consult with Data, Academic Planning, and Institutional Research (DAPIR) leadership in planning for, defining the scope of, and strategy for, major information technology projects.  

 

The preferred candidate will have a history of successful data project implementations, ideally with a focus on cloud architecture, data warehousing, and in-depth data analysis. Strong project leadership, professionalism, and coordination across many diverse stakeholder groups including vendor partnerships will be essential. Sr. IT Project managers will have regular contact with campus leaders, directors, faculty and staff as we collaborate on initiating solutions, planning courses of action, and executing and controlling business and technology projects that affect students, staff and employees campus wide. 

The candidate selected for this position may perform a combination of on-site and remote work subject to an approved flexible work arrangement (FWA) agreement, which is reviewed and approved annually. Remote work requires successful candidates to possess their own high-speed internet and phone to perform the work on a university provided computer. Per University policy, transportation between home and assigned work location is not payable/reimbursable and will be at the expense of the employee. This position will primarily work remote but may need to come to campus occasionally for planned meetings, retreats, or workshops.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Participate in internal and external associations and professional development opportunities relevant to project, strategy, and organization change management

  • Serves as a main point of contact for clients in the development and implementation of complex and enterprise-wide projects
  • Provides advanced technical and analytical guidance to project teams. Identifies and estimates tasks and applies established project management, process improvement, and budget and cost analysis methodologies to drive project completion
  • Schedules and facilitates communication for the integration of vendor workflow and tracks and reviews vendor deliverables for complex, enterprise-wide projects
  • Drafts and delivers project status communications and reports

The IT Portfolio & Project Management Office (PPMO) is a team of project managers, business analysts, organizational change managers, and portfolio management professionals who play a pivotal role in delivering projects that contribute to the university’s mission and vision in collaboration with stakeholders across the university. 

Compensation:

Starting salary will be based on experience and qualifications. Well qualified applicants can expect to earn between $130,000 - $140,000, with final salary based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Project management and program experience implementing large, complex information technology projects with diverse, cross-functional project teams comprised of functional stakeholders, technical teams, and executive sponsors. 
  • Certification in Project or Program Management from PMI 
  • Experience managing project teams consisting of 10+ members both remote, in person, and hybrid. 
  • Experience developing reports, communications, and documentation for diverse stakeholders (technical, non-technical, executive, etc.) 
  • Demonstrated experience in group facilitation and delivering presentations to various audiences. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in higher education. 
  • Organizational change management experience & certification (PROSCI) 
  • Portfolio Management experience 
  • Experience implementing enterprise cloud data warehousing or similar large scale data projects. 
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects & programs within multiple SDLC environments (waterfall, agile, hybrid, etc.) and experience implementing SDLC improvements 

Education:

Bachelor's Degree Preferred Minimum
