Job Summary:

The Corn Breeding and Genetics program at the Department of Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking a field research specialist to support corn pollination, phenotyping and seed and sample processing activities at the West Madison Ag Research Station. This position will begin early November, 2024. The start date is flexible. Interested candidates will be needed for 40 hrs/week most weeks with additional hours, including some weekends, during the busiest times of field research in periods of summer.

Responsibilities:

Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.
  • 20% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 15% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 15% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 45% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 5% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor's Degree
in Agronomy, Ecology, Fisheries and Wildlife or related field

Qualifications:

Required:
* A Drone pilot license will be required for this position. It is preferred that the candidate have a current drone pilot license prior to starting the position, if not, they will be required to obtain a license at the earliest possible date following the start of employment.
* Valid US driver's license and the ability to obtain driving authorization from UW to drive project vehicles/equipment

Preferred:
* Field corn breeding research experience, including experience with the following:
o Pollination
o Hand harvesting of corn or silage sampling
o Plant phenotyping
o Germplasm inventorying and handling

License/Certification:

Required
Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards

Required
Drone pilot license

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $45,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The anticipated salary range for this position is $45,000 - $59,000. However, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and paid time off; competitive insurances and savings accounts; retirement benefits.

* This position requires the ability to carry 50 pounds and work outside in inclement weather
