Job Summary:
The Makielski Laboratory in the Department of Medical Sciences in the School of Veterinary Medicine is looking to recruit a full-time Research Specialist to support research projects and assist in lab organization. We are a translational research lab that investigates extracellular vesicle (EV) biology in cancer and other chronic conditions associated with aging in humans and companion animals.
The ideal candidate is highly motivated, passionate about science, and displays good attention to detail and organization. The ideal candidate also works well both independently and as part of a collaborative team. Prior lab experience is a plus, and training will be provided as needed.
Duties will vary according to the needs of the lab and can include coordinating sample collection and processing from clinical cases, cell culture, EV enrichment and characterization, DNA/RNA extraction, and preparation of samples for next-generation sequencing. Additional duties will include supporting and conducting mouse-based experiments, as the lab’s research needs develop. The candidate will also contribute to the day-to-day operations of the lab, including managing supply inventory and ordering, maintaining equipment and coordinating maintenance and repairs, maintaining and updating standard operating procedures and experimental protocols, and training new personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures. Occasional weekend and evening work could be required for time-sensitive samples or experiments. The candidate is expected to participate in weekly lab group meetings. Additional opportunities for presentation and contributing to preparation of publications are available depending on the candidate’s interest.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
- Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
- Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
- Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
- Performs literature reviews and writes reports
- Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results

Compensation:
Minimum $52,000/yr, negotiable based on qualifications and experience
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, ideally in a science-related field or equivalent level of experience in a research lab setting
- Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to accurately follow procedures and protocols
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with laboratory techniques (e.g., cell culture, PCR, immunoblotting)
- Education – B.S. or B.A. or higher degree with focus on science is preferred
- Experience with lab animals (e.g., mice) is preferred
Education:
