Job Summary:
The faculty, students, and staff in the Department of Biomolecular Chemistry (BMC), as part of the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), are engaged in an array of research, teaching, and service activities to meet the needs of our world-class educational institution. The department is housed within the Hector Deluca Biochemical Sciences complex, a state-of-the-art research and instructional complex located on Henry Mall, and has a reputation for carrying out federally funded, high-level, competitive biomedical research.
The Post Award Accountant plays a critical role in supporting members of the BMC Department engaged in sponsored (externally funded) biomedical research. This position ensures consistent, accurate, and insightful financial reporting that strengthens the department’s robust research portfolio. Under the general supervision of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Post Award Accountant provides expertise in purchasing, financial reporting and analysis, and faculty guidance, while actively expanding knowledge in related areas to effectively fulfill assigned responsibilities.
Working collaboratively with the CAO and department faculty, the Post Award Accountant advances the broader goals of the BMC Department at UW–Madison. By supporting faculty, staff, and students in managing and stewarding their research funding, this role is essential to enabling the department’s mission.
This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Ability to interpret, analyze, and communicate financial data.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
Strong initiative and organizational skills, along with the ability to be flexible, meet deadlines, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Prepares and processes financial reporting and/or invoicing information
- Provides expertise and advice related to procurement and allowable charges
- Reviews financial expenditures for accuracy on sponsored grants and contracts
- Assists principal investigators with financial management of sponsored program budgets and directs day-to-day fiscal transactions
Serves as subject matter expert to leadership, staff, and institutional stakeholders regarding sponsored programs accounting and financial operations, policies and procedures

Compensation:
The starting salary for the position is $56,112 annually; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
Minimum of one year of experience in sponsored grant financial management, post-award accounting, and compliance with higher education, government, or other highly regulated environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of federal award compliance requirements and sponsor terms and conditions.
Understanding of the full award life cycle, including expenditure monitoring, annual progress reporting, and closeout procedures.
Demonstrated experience using Workday for financial reporting.
Experience managing complex awards and subawards.
Experience with UW transactions and policies is strongly preferred.
Education:
Associate Degree preferred; focus in business, finance or accounting
