Job Summary:
The University of Wisconsin Department of Pediatrics (DOP) is seeking a Clinical Research Director to provide leadership, oversight, and strategic planning for its expanding clinical research portfolio - in fiscal year 2024, more than 1/3 of the research projects in the department were clinical studies. Within the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), the DOP has experienced significant growth over the last decade - the number of faculty has grown over 40% to more than 215, research funding doubled to more than $40 million, and the DOP has ranked in the top 20 for NIH funding amongst departments of pediatrics for the past 10 years and four times in the top 10.
Key priorities for this position are to work closely with department leaders and stakeholders to evaluate current and develop new workflows and processes to streamline and improve support for DOP research, with a focus on reviewing studies for scientific, operational, and financial feasibility and in compliance with university and health system policies, procedures, and regulations. This position requires strong collaboration with faculty, researchers, health system professionals, and leadership to advance research initiatives that align with the DOP's academic and clinical goals, while navigating the challenges of a complex academic medical center and interacting with UW Health, UnityPoint Health-Meriter, and other health systems, clinic sites and departments.
This position will directly supervise at least 2.0 FTE in supervisory and leadership roles, with indirect supervision of approximately 10.0 FTE in additional staff.
A successful candidate will be an effective communicator and leader, have a service-oriented approach, be skilled at building interpersonal relationships with constructive interactions, demonstrate a high-degree of initiative, strong multi-tasking abilities, and work independently using initiative and good judgment.

Responsibilities:
Plans, develops, and directs a clinical research program within a division, center, or department. Solicits clinical research opportunities, develops policies and procedures, and has significant responsibility for the overall functioning and effectiveness of the clinical research. Supervises one or more Clinical Research Managers.
- 25% Plans staff implementation of protocols and on-going quality review of one or multiple highly complex clinical research trials or programs
- 25% Analyzes research portfolios and accounts, solicits internal and external research opportunities, promotes unit capabilities, and makes recommendations to leadership for strategic program enhancements
- 15% Compiles audits and documents research data to ensure necessary compliance with institutional policies and procedures
- 10% Composes, assembles, and submits grant proposals and protocols according to applicable rules and regulations
- 15% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
- 10% Develops and monitors the program budget; and reviews and approves expenditures

Qualifications:
Required:
- At least 5 years of progressive leadership experience with a record of significant accomplishments
- At least 5 years of experience working with clinical trials and investigator-initiated clinical research projects
- At least 4 years of direct supervisory experience
Preferred:
- Certification in Clinical Research (e.g., CCRP, CCRA) or similar professional qualifications
- At least 3 years of experience working in an academic medical center
- Experience with Institutional Regulatory Board (IRB) requirements
- Experience working in a pediatric clinical setting (inpatient and/or outpatient)
- Experience with quality improvement
Additional knowledge, skills, abilities:
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time and in a high-stakes environment
- High degree of initiative and experience with operational efficiencies, human resources management, and strategic planning

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

The starting salary for the position is $125,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
