Responsibilities:
Performs complex lab testing and suggests suitable methods of specimen collection and representation for analysis to support clinicians or research.
- 20% Develops and schedules day-to-day technical lab work plans independently
- 15% Recommends complex improvements to lab procedures and experimentation design based on sample type, previous results, and research goals
- 15% Maintains specimen, data, and lab management systems for accurate sample tracking, billing, and supply replenishment in support of operations independently
- 10% Develops and directs extensive complex immunohistochemical protocols, adaptations, and quality assurance processes to support work unit objectives
- 5% Facilitates trainings in histology techniques and methods to students and lab personnel
- 15% Prepares specimens for examination and analysis
- 20% Perform routine and complex histology procedures
Tasks:
- Assure appropriate specimen identification and accessioning
- In association with the pathologist(s), describe gross anatomic features: describe the overall specimen dimensions, structures, size, and appearance.
- Dissect specimens and prepare tissues for processing according to established procedures.
- In collaboration with the pathologist(s), prepare gross tissue sections for histopathological diagnostics
- Photograph of pertinent specimens
- Assure proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of the trim/grossing room
- Receive specimens and carefully check paperwork for accuracy and completeness, including appropriate documentation of medical necessity
- Contact ordering source if any information is incomplete
- Resolve problems and complete documentation as required
- Use established policies and procedures for specimen acceptability and troubleshoot or clarify questions regarding specimen integrity.
- Practice universal safety precautions according to hospital policy and procedures at all times (e.g. use of gloves, lab coat, and other Personal Protective Equipment)
- Embeds tissue with proper orientation and performs microtomy of embedded tissue with minimal artifacts
- Performs H&E staining on a wide variety of tissue types.
- Performs solution preparation with accuracy and proper labeling.
- Performs special staining techniques
- Take responsibility for maintaining safety standards in the lab setting by following hospital and laboratory policy.
- Enters histology billing information into the billing software
- Creates labels, prepares slides and files slide for the histology
- Participates in training incoming anatomic pathology residents

Qualifications:
Minimum - Two years laboratory experience preferred.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
1. Hands on experience in an anatomy course with accompanying lab performing simple dissections is preferred
3. Knowledge of histologic techniques and related laboratory terminology
4. Ability to effectively communicate with pathologists, residents, and both intradepartmental and interdepartmental staff
5. Ability to understand and follow complex technical instructions; ability to pay close attention to detail
6. Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and hygienic cleaning techniques
7. Familiarity with the techniques of maintaining a filing system; accuracy; good dexterity; dependability; initiative; good judgment
8. Knowledge on basic instrument maintenance (temperatures, monitoring reagents), supply inventory and quality control to review and evaluate test or instrument performance
9. Ability to lift 45-pound objects to a height of 4 feet, and to bend, stoop and twist on a regular basis.
10. Ability to problem solve, work independently, and prioritize tasks according to the needs of the department

Work Schedule:
This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position scheduled to work Monday - Friday. Hours may vary based on the needs of the department. Night and weekend differential available, if applicable.
Potential for some on-call hours, as required by the hospital.
