Job Summary:
The Office of Multicultural Affairs Health Professions Learners (OMA-HPL) provides academic support for students historically underrepresented in medical professions and creates an inclusive learning environment that fosters academic success for all students. The OMA-HPL promotes student success while also leading the School of Medicine and Public Health at UW-Madison (UW-SMPH) outreach initiatives to increase the number of underrepresented students entering the health professions.
The Multicultural Initiatives Specialist will assist the Pathways Manager in the development of
pathways programs and outreach initiatives that support the mission of the UW-SPMH. This position will directly support the OMA-HPL pathways programs as well as OMA-HPL outreach programs for pre-college and undergraduate students. The position will collaborate with undergraduate programs, pre-medical organizations, student advisors, Universities of Wisconsin schools, and health profession programs at the UW-SMPH.
Responsibilities:
Advises multicultural student organizations and student leadership and affiliates, develops and executes programming, and serves on institutional committees to support multicultural students and their allies.
- 30% Provides consultation, resources, and referrals concerning multicultural affairs to various audiences
- 20% Assists organizations in developing and implementing sustainable leadership practices; and navigating established policies, procedures, and resource management strategies
- 20% Schedules logistics and secures resources for academic, cultural and social programs and events that contribute to the recruitment and retention of multicultural students and the enrichment of the institutional community
- 10% Serves as liaison to various committees regarding initiatives and best practices
- 10% Identifies, promotes, and maintains external partnerships to support the outreach program by delivering outreach program content and materials to community members
- 10% Researches, develops, and facilitates outreach program content and materials by developing and evaluating curriculum and programs to provide recommendations for improvement
Tasks:
- Assist with planning and delivering outreach program activities, strengthen partnerships, ensure adherence to policy, and assist with program administration to promote stable and productive relationships between the OMA-HPL and their partners.
- Support the planning, execution, and evaluation of the Rural and Urban Scholars in Community Health (RUSCH) program and the Health Professions Shadowing Program (HPSP).
- Coordinate multicultural outreach and recruitment efforts for OMA-HPL. Responsible for the completion of program administrative tasks and general communication; including creating and updating marketing materials, and other communication sources.
- Assist Pathways Manager in the development, implementation, and promotion of pathway programs and activities (public and private tours, classes, programs, workshops, and exhibits)
- Maintain relationships with UW-Madison departments, strategic peer institutions, and organizations that support the outreach, recruitment, and retention of multicultural students.
- Conduct webinars, information sessions, and school visits attend college fairs, and participate in other activities that support enrollment for prospective students and their families, school counselors, and others.
- Keep accurate, complete, and timely program records to contribute to federal, state, and University reporting requirements.
- Assist with the creation of program evaluations and analysis of data reports on program outcomes.

Qualifications:
Required:
- Experience in student outreach, pathways programs, or student support; particularly in a higher education setting, with a focus on supporting students from underrepresented and/or historically marginalized backgrounds, student recruitment, and/or graduate program preparation.
- Excellent communication and customer service: Demonstrate ability to manage high volumes of communications while providing timely follow-up to meet program needs and with a proven ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with diverse student populations.
- Excellent administrative and organizational skills: Demonstrate knowledge of administrative practices and general office systems (word processing, spreadsheets, file management, scheduling software, etc.) Demonstrate knowledge of programmatic support and implementation (scheduling learner activities, coordinating programs and events, preparing professional documents and program materials, maintaining accurate records, and meeting assigned deadlines).
