Job Summary:

Wisconsin Public Radio is looking for the next Managing Producer for Wisconsin Today, our weekday program that focuses on news, in-depth stories, and community across Wisconsin. The managing producer shepherds broadcast and digital content on Wisconsin Today by approving pitches, assigning content, and scheduling topics. They also schedule and manage the performance of a team of content producers while collaborating with hosts, technical directors, and related staff. This person is an excellent communicator and problem-solver who works well on deadlines and has an eye for detail. This position reports to the Executive Producer of Wisconsin Today, and they will partner with the EP to execute on the vision and mission of Wisconsin Today. The person in this role may work an in-person, remote, or hybrid schedule, depending on needs. The role is based in our offices in Madison, Wisconsin.

Responsibilities:

Provides leadership for broadcast and/or digital content, programs or projects and their teams, including strategic and long-range planning, evaluation and development of pitches and content, staff performance coaching and feedback, creating and communicating goals to staff, and coordinating production, administration, procedures and agreements.
  • 30% Directs various administrative aspects that may include booking guests for interviews, maintaining team schedules and deadlines, and creating and/or maintaining program and/or project budgets
  • 25% Supervises the work of hosts, producers, reporters and/or support staff for the production of broadcast and/or digital content. May serve as back-up host or fill-in for producers when necessary
  • 5% Serves as a liaison to internal and external stakeholders. Collaborates with other content creators in pre-production through post-production processes
  • 10% Leads editorial planning meetings and generates program ideas for segments, shows, and digital projects
  • 10% Monitors and evaluates program content and employs editorial judgement to generate program ideas, and create, write, and edit content
  • 20% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor's Degree; emphasis in journalism, communications or related field is preferred.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Full-time experience in journalism.
- Superior communication skills, including excellent writing skills for broadcast and web.
- Proven ability to work in both independent and collaborative settings.
- Strong organizational skills, ability to work within tight deadlines and manage competing responsibilities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of journalism ethics, newsgathering and reporting techniques.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience scheduling staff and managing employee performance.
- Experience in live or recorded broadcast.
- Experience recording and editing audio/video interviews or stories.
- Experience producing and/or editing digital content.
- Experience using online platforms or digital strategies to grow an audience.
- Ability to operate digital production software, control boards and audio recorders.
- Knowledge and understanding of Wisconsin news, culture, issues and personalities.
- Experience with document sharing and virtual meeting software (e.g. Microsoft, Slack, Google, etc.)

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position currently has the flexibility to work remotely, though in-person work is an expectation of this role and is dependent on operational needs. The position is headquartered in our Madison location. Remote work and office flexibility will be discussed in more detail during the interview process.

Salary:

Minimum $70,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

The expected salary minimum for this position is $70,000. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.
