Job Summary:
This position serves as a Forensic Toxicology Supervisor within the Forensic Toxicology Program of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH), performing duties under the general supervision of the Forensic Toxicology Program Director. This position is focused on forensic toxicology data review and reporting of alcohol and other drugs in Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) and Medical Examiner casework. It includes analytical, quality assurance, and support activities associated with the WSLH role as an ANAB ISO 17025 and American Board of Forensic Toxicology accredited laboratory. Ensuring staff comply with laboratory accreditation requirements and quality control/quality assurance principles to provide high quality, defensible data and results to law enforcement agencies, attorneys, coroners/medical examiners, and other professionals who use laboratory services. Travel to meetings and conferences as well as courtroom testimony regarding alcohol and drugs and their effects on the human body are also major responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
Provides technical and administrative assistance to the forensic toxicology department and represents the laboratory at state, regional, or national meetings and activities. Provides support to staff, law enforcement agencies, district attorneys, coroners/medical examiners, and other professionals who use laboratory services.
- 30% Reviews analytical work and provides advice on technical difficulties
- 35% Prepares and reviews computer reports of analyses in the alcohol and drug program and assigns forensic scientists for signature on generated reports
- 5% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
- 5% Collaborates with management to evaluate new methodology for laboratory use, including selecting a suitable assay method, establishing protocol for evaluation, and devising experimental design
- 5% Recruits new employees and conducts employee performance evaluations
- 5% Identifies, develops, and facilitates unit staff training opportunities
- 5% Contributes to the development of the relevant science through professional association conference attendance, presentations, and participation
- 10% Provides clear, objective case interpretation for court testimony to appropriate entities to relay scientific findings regarding the analysis and effects of alcohol and drugs on human performance and in medicolegal death investigations

Education:
Required
Bachelor's Degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology or other appropriate science field.
Qualifications:
Minimum 5 years of laboratory experience and 3 years of leadership or supervisory experience in a professional or academic laboratory setting. Those with Forensic Toxicology Laboratory experience will receive preference.
Knowledge of the theory of operation of GCMS, LCMS, and QToF instrumentation as well as experience with GC Headspace. Experience in examining and interpreting analytical data from various types of instrumentation including MSD, HRMS, and LCMSMS. Knowledge of the extraction of biological specimens by various methods for the detection of drugs of abuse and experience interpreting and reporting the data. An individual with an understanding of quality control and quality assurance principles within a forensic toxicology laboratory is required. Knowledge of accreditation requirements is necessary. Ability to work as part of a team and demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills. Management and leadership in a forensic toxicology laboratory is preferred.

Excellent verbal communication skills are essential to meet the responsibilities of this position.
Effective use of quality principles and tools as well as effective team skills will be important. Exceptional customer service skills and interpersonal skills will be required.
This position may require the individual to work with blood and other clinical sample matrices.
Possession of a valid driver's license and driving record that meets University of Wisconsin Risk Management guidelines is required.
