Job Summary:
The Financial Shared Services department within the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) Dean's Office is seeking a full-time Accountant III, to work in partnership with the units supported by Shared Services. The Financial Shared Services department supports basic science and research departments, centers, and institutes involved in non-sponsored and sponsored activities.
This position will perform post award management of external grants and complex accounting tasks, prepare financial and statistical reports, develop and/or manage complex budgets, deliver training to others, and document controls for accounting systems to ensure accurate recording and reporting of the business unit's financial transactions.
Responsibilities:
Performs complex accounting duties, prepares financial and statistical reports, delivers training to others, develops and/or manages complex budgets, and develops and documents controls for accounting systems to ensure the accurate recording and reporting of the business unit's financial transactions. May lead and be a resource for others in their department/unit.
- 25% Leads and executes the development, organization, preparation, and updating of complex financial statements, journals, accounts, ledgers, and reports for various financial needs within an automated financial system to ensure accurate recording and reporting of financial transactions
- 20% Prepares and analyzes financial reports, data and records, identifies discrepancies, investigates, and recommends solutions as needed
- 10% Monitors automated financial systems, develops, and documents controls to ensure system reliability and data integrity
- 10% Performs complex accounting and auditing reconciliations, journal entries, schedules, and reports
- 10% Develops and manages complex work unit budgets, analyzing funding sources, operational needs, budget trends, and financial commitments
- 5% Forecasts budget balances and recommends corrective action as needed
- 15% Answers questions and provides accounting related information to internal and external stakeholders according to established policies and procedures
- 5% Facilitates trainings and provides financial guidance to management and staff

Qualifications:
Required:
- At least 3 years of demonstrated proficiency in accounting or financial principles such as budgeting, financial projections, preparing reconciliations, journal entries, and complex financial reporting.
- Advanced proficiency in Smartsheets, Microsoft Excel, or Google Sheets including complex formulas and pivot tables to create financial dashboards.
Preferred:
- Experience in a highly regulated environment such as a university or government organization. Three or more years of experience in a relevant sector is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with post-award management of grants and complex accounting tasks related to award management. Three or more years of experience in this work is strongly preferred.
- Experience with change management, such as financial systems or enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Experience with Workday is strongly preferred.
- Experience working with complex automated accounting systems and processes, including database or queries.
Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Strong oral & written communication skills to explain and present complex financial data and information through a variety of reports to key stakeholders such as Principle Investigators, Chairs, and Chief Financial Officers.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload, effectively manage multiple projects and deadlines, and independently follow-through on tasks unsupervised.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to manage complex budgets and financial transactions.
- Ability to interpret and apply financial regulations and compliance standards.
- Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accuracy and integrity in financial reporting.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating adaptability in a dynamic environment.

The starting salary for the position is $70,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
