Job Summary:

The Research Cyberinfrastructure group at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Division of Information Technology is hiring a Data Movement Engineer. The Data Movement Engineer will administer enterprise-wide applications for data movement, data management, and data sharing across the University's distributed research infrastructure. In this role, you will be responsible for administering Globus infrastructure that connects research data, storage, and computing resources across the University and enables secure sharing of data between internal and external research collaborations. You will consult with research groups to help them leverage this infrastructure to meet their data transfer and automation needs. You will become an expert at creating and advising researchers on low friction, automated paths for data movement. You will partner with groups in central and distributed IT, research computing centers, and the Libraries to identify best practices for automated data workflows, data-sharing, and data management. Your work will provide key elements of research computing infrastructure that support the University's RISE (Research Innovation and Scholarly Excellence) initiative.

The Research Cyberinfrastructure unit, within the Division of Information Technology, is a group of IT professionals that provides services and support to researchers for their data, computing, data science, and AI-based work. To do this, we partner extensively with groups in central and distributed IT, research computing centers, the Data Science Institute, and the Libraries. Responsibilities:

Configures, integrates, administers, and provides advanced and varied consultation, project management, and operational support of highly complex applications or services with a large number of users. Anticipates issues and devises resolution methodology to support the business operations of the institution.
  • 10% Creates and updates access permissions and maintains user accounts to maintain application security through user profile management
  • 10% Monitors and maintains performance metrics for application features and recommends and takes corrective/preventive actions
  • 10% Troubleshoots hardware, software, and system problems and resolves issues and questions by working with vendors
  • 10% Participates in the evaluation of vendor software releases and impact
  • 10% Coordinates and monitors updates and the installation of upgrades and patches
  • 10% Recommends application enhancements or changes that may involve custom design, integrations, and third-party products
  • 10% Participates in the design, development, and implementation of test and production objects. Defines user requirements and performs configuration, change management, and testing activities
  • 10% Develops and maintains documentation related to the system. Communicates system enhancement or changes as needed
  • 10% Plans and directs staff implementation of small to medium technical projects related to system as needed
  • 10% Regularly communicates with internal leadership to assess efficacy of system and discuss improvements and new features

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
-Professional experience supporting and administering Linux web applications with distributed administration
-Professional experience scripting and automating workflows using command line and REST APIs for software integrations
-Experience providing IT solutions to meet the needs of users with a wide range of requirements as part of a cross-functional technical team delivering services to varied audiences
-Professional experience providing and maintaining processes for end-to-end IT service delivery and operational resilience
-Experience supporting applications using enterprise Identity Management systems such as Globus/CILogon, SAML/Shibboleth/OIDC, Active Directory/LDAP, EntraID

Preferred Qualifications
-Proficiency scripting in Python
-Experience supporting applications for research computing workflows, data storage and transfer, such as Globus
-Knowledge of the day-to-day processes involved in research and discovery, including research workflows, data lifecycles, and grant funding cycles and requirements
-Familiarity with protocols used to access network attached storage systems, such as SMB, NFS, and Amazon S3
-Familiarity with security protocols and regulatory compliance areas that impact research (i.e., NSPM-33, HIPAA, FISMA, Controlled Unclassified Information)

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position is eligible for any of the following: 100% remote work; partial remote work; or fully on-site. Remote work requires an approved remote work agreement (RWA) agreement, which is reviewed and approved annually. An RWA requires successful candidates to possess their own high-speed internet and phone to perform the work on a university provided computer. Per University policy, transportation between home and assigned work location is not payable/reimbursable and will be at the expense of the employee.

Salary:

Minimum $82,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
Starting salary will be based on experience and qualifications. Well qualified applicants can anticipate to earn between $82,000 - $91,000, with final salary based on experience and qualifications.
