Job Summary:

The Beef Herdsman-Lead position supports the beef cattle operations. This person is the primary animal caretaker and takes care of daily animal health checks, feeding, and records. The position follows protocols established for the various research projects.

Responsibilities:

Collects samples and administers medication and treatments, in addition to feeding and maintenance responsibilities, to ensure compliance with animal care regulations and support research and instruction.
  • 15% Collects samples from animals and administers medications, injections, and treatments according to established protocols and procedures to be used for diagnostic tests and research
  • 10% Inventories, cleans, and maintains organization of animal holding spaces and supplies
  • 15% Prepares food and formulas and feeds animals according to established schedules and specifications
  • 10% Inspects and reports equipment problems to ensure optimal and safe operation
  • 15% Maintains organization of and updates records related to research procedures
  • 20% Observes animal behavior, performs basic animal care, and reports concerns to the appropriate entities to contribute to the health and well-being of animals and promote research
  • 15% Performance of Facilities, Maintenance, and General Farm Work

Education:

Qualifications:

Required:
-Beef Production experience including health checks, feeding, record keeping, administering animal health products.
-Grazing experience including cattle handling, forage and weed management, fence repair and construction, and pasture watering system management
-General farm experience including ability to safely operate tractors, total mixed ration (TMR) mixer, ATVs, UTVs, and pickup trucks with livestock trailers.

Preferred:
-Agriculture and/or Beef Research Experience
-Experience with advanced beef reproduction techniques including estrus synchronization and artificial insemination.

Work Schedule:

Normal hours are 7:45am - 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Occasional nights and weekends may be required for this position.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $18.36 HOURLY
Depending on Qualifications
The anticipated salary range for this position is $18.36/hour - $22.00/hour. However, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications.
