Job Profile:

Assistant Professor

Job Summary:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Quantum Cryogenics, Thermal Management for Quantum Systems, and Quantum Infrastructure.

We seek candidates with a vision to address the engineering challenges of cooling, operating, and scaling quantum systems and to strengthen, broaden and deepen related research in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Interests include but are not limited to: sub-kelvin refrigeration and cryocoolers; low-temperature heat and mass transfer; thermal management of quantum devices and systems; cryogenic materials, components, and instrumentation; and the integration, reliability, and scaling of quantum infrastructure.

While both theoretical and applied research is of interest, we are particularly interested in candidates that can articulate a clear vision of how their research will translate from research to practice in the broad context of Mechanical Engineering applications. Research in these areas is anticipated to enable advances in quantum computing, sensing, and communication, where cooling capacity, thermal loads, wiring, vibration, and system reliability present significant engineering challenges. We also welcome research with applications to other cryogenic technologies, including superconducting systems for fusion, space, and medicine.

The UW Mechanical Engineering Department has a longstanding strength in cryogenic engineering, grounded in experimental research on refrigeration cycles, low-temperature heat transfer, and thermal systems design. Current work includes sub-kelvin cooling, helium-3/helium-4 mixtures, superfluid transport, magnetic refrigeration, and thermal-management technologies. This expertise is complemented by broader departmental strengths in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, materials, and system integration. The successful candidate will be able to build an independent research program while collaborating with colleagues across engineering and the physical sciences, including through the Wisconsin Quantum Institute, on the infrastructure needed to operate and make https://engineering.wisc.edu/research/moonshots/>.

The department welcomes candidates who transcend the traditional boundaries of Mechanical Engineering and can incorporate insights from Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Materials Engineering or related disciplines to holistically address high impact societal problems related to the areas described above. Candidates should articulate how their research will engage and attract Mechanical Engineering students from all backgrounds.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering advances the mission of the College of Engineering to foster a respectful and inclusive environment for all members of our community.

Additional Information:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is rapidly expanding, with growing student enrollment and a dynamic wave of faculty hires, making it one of the university’s most vibrant and fast-evolving departments.
