Job Summary:

The Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences is seeking a motivated, caring individual to join our administrative team to serve our rapidly growing undergraduate student population. This position will provide a comprehensive range of advising services in one-on-one and organized group settings including new student orientation and oversight of academic progress towards degrees in the two majors of Animal & Veterinary Biosciences and Dairy & Food Animal Management.

The Academic Advisor serves as the primary resource for undergraduate students in two majors within the Animal and Dairy Sciences Department. Responsibilities include; advising students regarding course options and degree requirements, assistance with professional development, assistance with scholarship and award opportunities, and promoting high-impact practices aimed at enhancing undergraduate student experiences. Key duties include fostering opportunities for undergraduate research and facilitating internships by connecting students with research projects and professional placement opportunities.

Responsibilities:

Engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
  • 20% Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
  • 55% Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • 5% Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
  • 5% Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
  • 5% Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
  • 5% Proactively engages students as needed
  • 5% Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree

Qualifications:

Required
Experience in academic programs. (Expertise with advised curriculum; developing & recommending exceptions for policy & curriculum, scheduling w/ faculty, etc.)
Experience in undergraduate or graduate advising. (Advising students with course/degree options, assistance with professional development, scholarships/awards, etc.)

Preferred
Experience in biological sciences (Animal and/or Dairy Science)
Three or more years of experience working in an academic setting.

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Appointment Type, Duration:

Ongoing/Renewable

Salary:

Minimum $55,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications

Additional Information:

Schedule: This position will be scheduled to work 40 hours per week with the intended schedule of Monday through Friday, 7:45am - 4:30pm. Hours will be flexible in order to ensure operational needs are met, and some weekend work may be required.
