Job Summary:
Food Research Institute (FRI) Applied Food Microbiology and Safety Laboratory is looking to hire two Research Specialists who will conduct food challenge studies with bacterial foodborne pathogens. Principal duties include: assay foods, analyze data and prepare reports, perform chemical and physical food composition analysis, maintain and organize cultures and lab equipment/supplies, and oversee student workers.
The successful candidate must be capable of working independently and coordinating multiple projects in a fast paced environment. The individual must be able to pass screening to be authorized to work with Select Agents.
Responsibilities:
Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.
- 30% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
- 20% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
- 15% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
- 15% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
- 10% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
- 10% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

Education:
Preferred
Bachelor's Degree in food science, microbiology, or biology
Qualifications:
Required:
- Food microbiology experience including aseptic technique, collecting and analyzing research data, and conducting literature reviews
- Successful completion of bacteriology coursework, including laboratory skills with classic microbiology
- Must be able to pass Tier I Select Agent screening requirements
Preferred:
- Research experience with Listeria monocytogenes, Clostridium perfringens, and Salmonella
- Experience working with laboratory animals
Work Type:
Full or Part Time: 50% - 100%
It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
Work Schedule: Some weekend work required ? must be flexible
