Job Summary:
The Office of Radiation Safety is hiring a Health Physics Technician to join their team within the Department of Environment, Health & Safety. The Health Physics Technician plays a key role in the implementation of procedures and processes for the UW-Madison Radiation Safety Program and will report directly to the Associate Radiation Safety Officer. The Radiation Safety Program establishes radiation safety standards to ensure the health and safety of personnel who work with or who may be exposed to radiation.
The Health Physics Technician integrates regulatory requirements and best practices with results from field observations into programmatic actions. They help ensure that radiation exposure to staff, members of the public, and the environment are As Low As Reasonably Achievable. The Health Physics Technician is expected to regularly communicate with clinical and research staff to support the creation of a safe work environment.
This position will have a broad range of responsibilities which may include maintenance of spaces and
equipment used with radioactive material, identification/quantification/processing of radioactive waste, preparing and shipping radioactive material and/or waste, assisting with decommissioning projects, radiological surveys, and more depending on department needs as well as employee skills and interest.

Hours generally scheduled onsite, Monday-Friday typically from 8:00 am–4:30 pm. Occasional nights may be required for this position.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Assists with the planning of emergency plans and protocols
Identification, handling, processing, disposal, and documentation of radioactive waste generated at UW Health facilities.
- Provides basic knowledge and guidance to internal and external stakeholders in a specialized area of safety such as biosafety, chemical, hazardous materials, agriculture, lake, radiation, and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
- Assists with planning and executing technical inspections and consultations to measure compliance and identify practices that ensure safe operation of equipment

Compensation:
Minimum $26.00 (Hourly)
The starting hourly rate for the Health Physics Technician position is $26.00, but it is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
- At least one year of relevant work experience. A degree or coursework in the topical area may be substituted for work experience.
- Self-motivated, ability to work with supervision and professional judgment, and ability to work independently or as a team.
- Detail-oriented, demonstrated organizational and time management skills, and ability to manage/prioritize, track, and complete tasks/projects within established deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills and able to interact professionally and effectively with wide variety of individuals (researchers, staff, students, administrators, and regulators), behaving in accordance with institutional values.
- Committed to customer service, timely response, collaboration, cooperative professional relationships, and diversity.
- Ability to work in research labs, health care environments, animal facilities, and hazardous waste facilities. These locations may result in occasional occupational exposure to ionizing radiation, chemicals, and biological agents.
- Possession of a driver’s license that is valid and meets UW Risk Management standards
- Able to wear personal protective equipment, wear radiation dosimetry, and submit bioassay samples, as required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Working knowledge and experience interpreting applicable federal or state regulations, standards, and guidance pertaining to the possession and safe use of radioactive material and radiation generating devices.
- Demonstrated competence in oral and written communication, including written and in-person training/instruction/presentations and communicating technical information clearly and concisely.
- Previous DOT HMR and/or HAZWOPER training.
- Competent using PC, office productivity applications, presentation applications, and database applications.
- Able to push, pull, and move/transport 40 pounds routinely (e.g., packages, radiation detection equipment, or shielding).
- Able to move freely throughout facilities (including stairs), have dexterity to survey areas that may not be easily accessible, and endurance to perform lab visits and emergency response activities.
- Able to pass a respirator medical evaluation if required to enroll in the respiratory protection program.
Education:
Associate’s degree preferred, focus in radiation protection or related field preferred

Those working in or around animal facilities are required to complete an annual safety training and personnel medical evaluation form to gain clearance. Some areas have additional requirements for entry, including a TB test with negative results and measles titer test. We will provide trainings that will address hazards as well as how to safely perform job duties by, for example, following signage and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and then every four years.
