Job Summary:

The Fire & Life Safety Specialist position at the University of Wisconsin-Madison plays a vital role in promoting a pro-active, comprehensive, and full encompassing Fire & Life Safety program across 35 million square feet of buildings on campus. The incumbent will make recommendations for the control of identified hazards and assess hazards so that work, recreation, and research can be performed safely and in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards.

A typical day in this role would include:
- Involvement with campus Hot Work program and campus life safety impairment program
- Performing routine fire inspections on all building types of occupancies across campus (ex. assembly, residential, business, high-hazard, storage)
- Consulting and collaborating with campus stakeholders on how to best address fire safety issues
- Providing hands on fire extinguisher training to campus students and employees
- Other daily duties include assisting with AED inspection and program elements as needed, assisting with campus fire alarm reduction program, assist with campus standalone fire suppression system inspection, testing and maintenance, and evaluation and understanding standards and codes related to fire and life safety.

This position will be within the Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) department under the Division of Facilities, Planning, and Management (FP&M) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The EHS department provides guidance, technical consultations, and expertise to the campus community in the areas of biological, chemical, environmental, engineering, radiation, and fire safety. FP&M is a full spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of the UW-Madison campus in support of the university's education, research, and outreach activities.

Responsibilities:

Identifies and develops plans to address safety issues, provides consultation, and tracks and manages cases in a specific area of specialty so all work, recreation, and research can be performed safely and in compliance will all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Makes recommendations for the control of identified hazards and assesses hazards using relevant regulatory methodologies.
  • 5% Secures resources and schedules logistics for a safety program
  • 20% Identifies operational and safety issues and develops improvement plans and standard operating procedures
  • 20% Provides knowledge and guidance to internal and external stakeholders including leadership, in a specialized area of safety such biosafety, chemical, hazardous materials, agriculture, lake, radiation, and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
  • 15% Directs logistical activities, allocates resources and investigates components of specific health and safety cases
  • 10% Communicates findings to necessary stakeholders
  • 10% Reviews industry updates and may assist in developing safety communication materials based on industry changes
  • 5% Assist with implementing and coordinating campus life safety impairment program at UW-Madison. Assist stakeholders with understanding impairment procedures and assist when needed to ensure compliance
  • 10% Assist with implementing and coordinating campus Hot Work safety program at UW-Madison. Assist stakeholders with understanding Hot Work procedures and when needed to ensure compliance
  • 5% Perform facility inspections and observe work conditions and procedures to ensure safe work practices and compliance with International Fire Codes (IFC) and National Fire Protection Associate (NFPA)

Education:

Preferred

Qualifications:

Required:
- Certified Fire Inspector I (CFI)
- Ability to interact professionally and effectively with a wide variety of audiences

Preferred:
- 3 years or more inspecting new or existing buildings
- Commercial Building Inspector
- Fire alarm and water-based fire suppression system plan review experience

License/Certification:

Required
Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $60,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The starting salary is $60,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
