Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of its School of Medicine and Public Health and Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs. Since 1848, the UW-Madison campus has been a catalyst for the extraordinary. As a public land-grant university and one of the most prolific research institutions in the world, UW-Madison is home to those who are driven by a desire to both explore new worlds and to apply new ideas to real-world problems.

With a total annual budget of over $3.9 billion, including more than $1.52 billion in annual research expenditures, UW-Madison has been in the top 10 in national research spending every year since 1972. The campus is home to more than 25,000 faculty and staff and approximately 50,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree students. For more than a century, UW-Madison has been animated by the Wisconsin Idea - the principle that the university should improve people's lives beyond the classroom. The university has been dedicated to studying poverty and social inequity for 50 years, is consistently ranked among the top large schools for producing Peace Corps volunteers, and boasts 20 Nobel Prize winners among its faculty and alumni.

The Dean serves as the chief academic and executive officer of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) with responsibility for strategic and visionary leadership in teaching and research, as well as partnership with the academic health system to achieve shared goals. The Dean works closely with leaders and administrators of UW-Madison, the Universities of Wisconsin, and UW Health, SMPH's primary affiliated health system.

The Dean also holds the title of Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs, which entails a direct reporting relationship to the Chancellor (in addition to a direct reporting relationship to the Provost as Dean). In this capacity, the Dean serves as the direct liaison between the Chancellor of UW-Madison and the academic health system (UW Health). The Dean also holds the position of Chair or Vice Chair (alternating two-year terms) of the board of directors of UW Health. In this role, the Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs collaborates closely with the UW Health CEO and senior leaders to provide strategic direction for the entire health system.

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is recognized as an international leader in education, research, and service. Founded in 1907, it transformed into the nation's first School of Medicine and Public Health in 2005 to integrate the principles and value of interwoven medical and public health approaches in all its missions.

With more than 5,500 employees, including over 2,000 faculty members, the school's engagement spans the entire state of Wisconsin and includes a deep commitment to improving population health. This commitment manifests itself in innovative models that serve as paradigms for the rest of the country.

Members of the school translate discovery into application and continually foster synergies between public health, community engagement, clinical care, education, and research. Consistently ranked among the nation's top medical schools, the school has established high-performance academic programs that are distributed across the entire spectrum of academic medicine. The school trains students in five health professions degrees and programs - Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Master of Genetic Counselor Studies, Master of Physician Assistant Studies, and Master of Public Health - and is home to more than 20 doctoral and master's programs across the biomedical and health sciences as well as exceptional post-doctoral training programs. Its faculty members hold appointments in 27 departments - 17 in the clinical sciences and 10 in the basic sciences. The faculty is composed of some of the nation's leading researchers, educators, and clinicians. This includes several recipients of the National Medal of Science and Nobel Prize, as well as members of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.

The mission of the school is to advance health and health equity through remarkable service to patients and communities, outstanding education, and innovative research. Members of the school community uphold the values of integrity and accountability; compassion; diversity, equity, and inclusivity; and excellence.

Fostering a diverse and inclusive community is important both as an end in itself and as a valuable driver of eliminating health disparities. The school strives to be comprised of a diverse, inclusive academic community committed to excellence and equity in health; service through teaching and learning, clinical service, and advocacy; and research in all forms of biological science, population health science, and health care.

UW Health is the primary teaching affiliate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, serving more than 800,000 patients each year in the upper Midwest and beyond with more than 1,800 physicians and 24,000 staff across six main hospitals and more than 90 outpatient sites. The health system's total annual revenues exceed $5 billion. UW Health is a separate 501(c)3 with a historically strong partnership in serving our shared mission and it is an expectation that this be maintained and enhanced. UW Health is governed by the UW Hospitals and Clinics Authority (a public authority) and partners with UW School of Medicine and Public Health to fulfill patient care, research, education, and community service missions. The UW Health Office of Graduate Medical Education oversees more than 80 ACGME accredited residency and fellowship programs at UW Hospitals and Clinics. UW Health Hospitals, which includes University Hospital on the UW-Madison campus and UW Health East Madison Hospital on the east side of Madison, has been ranked No. 1 in Wisconsin for 12 years in a row by U.S. News and World Report. In addition, UW Health has been designated by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation as a Leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality in the Healthcare Equality Index for several years. In fall 2024, UW Health will open Eastpark Medical Center across from East Madison Hospital as a 469,000 square foot, seven-story facility for multi-disciplinary outpatient care. Eastpark Medical Center will be a destination for services including cancer care and integrated specialty care for women and will offer support for clinical trial participation.

The school also holds a significant academic partnership with the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital and Clinics, which serves 95,000 veterans across 19 counties in Wisconsin and Illinois. The Madison VA Hospital and Clinics have earned a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and received the 2021 Veterans Health Administration Overall Best Experience Award, which is the highest distinction for VA hospitals in the nation. In addition, partnerships with several health systems comprise the school's "statewide campus," which offers clinical training opportunities throughout Wisconsin. These include Advocate Aurora Health/Eastern Academic Campus, Marshfield Clinic Health System/Northern Academic Campus, and Gunderson Health System/Western Academic Campus.

The Dean also reports to the Board of Regents annually regarding activities of the Wisconsin Partnership Program (WPP), a grantmaking program within the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health that is committed to improving health and advancing health equity in Wisconsin through investments in community partnerships, education, and research. Since its inception in 2004, WPP has awarded $300 million through competitive funding decisions by two governance committees across 635 funded projects that benefit all 72 counties in Wisconsin. In fiscal year 2023, WPP provided $10.6 million in funding to 20 new grants and supported the progress of 66 active grants and 26 concluding projects. The program's endowment was valued at $411 million as of December 31, 2023.
