Job Summary:

The McBurney Disability Resource Center's Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) team is hiring a DHH Services Manager. Join us at the beautiful University of Wisconsin-Madison!

As someone with experience working with Deaf and hard of hearing populations, you will apply your knowledge and skills by:

- Coordinating sign language interpreters and live professional captioners
- Hiring, training and supervising interpreters or CART providers.
- Applying knowledge of utilizing data to tell the story of service delivery
- Providing consultation and resources to faculty, staff, students, employees, and community members regarding DHH services
- Innovating services to meet the needs of end users in a dynamic higher education environment.
- Presenting to campus partners about DHH related topics and services.
- Organizing community activities and fostering a sense of belonging for Deaf and hard of hearing students, employees and visitors to our campus.

Responsibilities:

Develops program goals, approves purchases and tracks expenses, and supervises staff to ensure access to the physical, educational, and social activities of the institution.
  • 5% Develops, implements, executes, and evaluates unit objectives to support the growth of the program and provide quality services to individuals with disabilities
  • 20% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 5% Monitors the unit budget, approves expenditures, and track expenses
  • 60% Plans and schedules logistics and secures resources to expand professional and academic advancement opportunities for disabled individuals
  • 5% Oversees one or multiple disability service programs to ensure equal access for individuals with disabilities
  • 5% Develops and presents trainings related to Deaf and hard of hearing services and Deaf culture

Tasks:

  • Coordinate Sign Language Interpreter and live professional CART captioning services for academic accommodations, non-academic accommodations, and public access requests.
  • Manage multiple timelines with numerous partners related to events.
  • Secure preparation materials and other resources needed to provide interpreting and CART services.
  • Hire/train/supervise sign language interpreters or CART providers. Work with service providers to understand their strengths, goals and how to best utilize their talents, to encourage professional growth and effective classroom access.
  • Utilize data to determine program trends and service needs to continue providing high quality services.
  • Consistently track details related to requests to allow smooth communication with team.
  • Organize hiring searches, serve on interview committees, and onboard new employees as program needs change.
  • Assist the DHH tech team with remote support and provide backup for DHH colleagues
  • Provide consultation related to DHH services to UW partners, local community and other universities.

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited post-secondary institution.

Qualifications:

Required:
- Broad knowledge of accommodations used by Deaf and hard of hearing community.
- Native or proficient in American Sign Language.
- Strong attention to details.
- Excellent interpersonal, spoken and/or signed, and written communications skills.
- Experience managing multiple tasks, timelines, and schedules while maintaining high-quality work.
- Experience with productivity tools (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, etc.)

Preferred:
- Familiarity with technology used by DHH community, including Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs), live captioning, media captioning, remote interpreting, video relay service, etc.
- Knowledge of certification and license requirements of sign language interpreters and CART providers.
- Ability to present on topics related to DHH services.
- Experience as a supervisor or leader.
- Knowledge of community and national resources related to DHH services.
- Knowledge of disability rights, Deaf culture and disability culture.

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely at an offsite, non-campus work location upon supervisor and department/Student Affairs division approval.

Salary:

Minimum $79,193 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The starting salary for this position will depend on experience and qualifications.
This position will be required to work occasional evenings/weekends to meet the program needs and priorities of the communities served.

The McBurney Disability Resource Center is the office for students with disabilities and classroom accommodations on the UW-Madison campus. As part of the student accommodation process, we work collaboratively with students and instructors to provide and support effective student accommodations. While the McBurney Center primarily focuses on student accommodations, the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Services Program also fills campus interpreting and captioning requests for departments, faculty, staff, visitors, program participants, and campus events.
