Job Summary:

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is the state's public and environmental health laboratory. As part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the WSLH is committed to exploring new ideas which benefit the state, the nation and the world. This position supervises and performs routine newborn screening test for congenital conditions as part of Wisconsin's Newborn Screening Program, within the Endocrinology and Hemoglobinopathies unit. The primary testing technologies include, but not limited to, immunoreactions, electrophoresis, enzymatic assays, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Additional technologies used within the Newborn Screening (NBS) Laboratory include tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), real-time and droplet digital PCR, Sanger and next generation sequencing. This position performs supervisory duties for up to six chemists. In conjunction with other professionals in the program, this position also communicates and reports screening test results. Duties in this position include the training of employees and visiting laboratory guests. This position contributes to the development of new analytical assays and serves as a subject matter technical expert and scientific leader to internal and external stakeholders. The position functions under general supervision and direction of the NBS Laboratory Manager/Directors.

The person in this position is expected to model and use the tools and principles of quality management in their daily work including: Demonstrate exceptional customer service by establishing and maintaining effective professional relationships with managers, supervisor, coworkers, and all customers. The person must use effective team skills to contribute to the efficient operation of the work unit and the organization. Participation in continuous learning through professional development activities is required.

This full time position works Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM and must be available weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities:

Manages testing services for an analytical area, performs testing, manages testing services and reports results for chemical constituents in specimens and samples collected from humans, plants, animals, or other environmental matrices. Serves as a subject matter technical expert and scientific leader to internal and external stakeholders.
  • 50% Develops, performs, and interprets test results or assays from chemical analysis to ensure quality results to the submitter
  • 10% Monitors scientific reporting to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures
  • 5% Oversees budget and schedules of operational work plans for a specialized technical laboratory area
  • 10% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 5% Develops operating policies and laboratory procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives to ensure quality control
  • 5% Oversees the inspection, maintenance, and repairs of equipment and instrumentation to ensure optimal and safe operation
  • 5% Recruits new employees and conducts employee performance evaluations
  • 5% Identifies, develops, and facilitates unit staff training opportunities
  • 5% Contributes to the development of the relevant science through professional association conference attendance, presentations, and participation

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology science from an accredited institution.

An official (or copy of an official) transcript showing conferred degree will be required prior to an offer of employment.

For degrees earned outside of the United States, proof of qualification equivalency is required and must be performed by a nationally recognized organization such as the National Association Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES) (http://www.naces.org) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (http://www.aice-eval.org). The candidate is responsible for all expenses related to acquiring and providing proof of qualifications.

Qualifications:

Minimum of seven years of clinical laboratory high complexity clinical testing, required. Knowledge of biological and chemical laboratory safety practices required. Knowledge of and experience with meeting Laboratory Accreditation requirements required. Experience with CAP accreditation, preferred. Public health laboratory experience preferred. Experience performing molecular diagnostic testing, preferred.

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is certified through the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA), and accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Applicants must qualify as a General Supervisor under CLIA 493.1461.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $75,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
Minimum salary is $75,000/year.

Actual salary is to be determined upon hire and dependent on qualifications.
