Job Summary:

The highly ranked Departments of Art History and African Cultural Studies are seeking excellent candidates for a tenure-track position at the assistant rank or tenured position at the associate rank beginning August 2024. We welcome candidates specializing in the art history of Africa or the African diaspora. The two departments are open to any time period, field of inquiry within these disciplines, and methodological approach. Both departments are especially interested in scholars working on cultural production who employ innovative, interdisciplinary methods and ways of thinking.

The position involves significant ongoing research and publication, as well as performance of department, university, and community services as appropriate for faculty rank. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in a range of exciting campus organizations and initiatives, such as the Center for Visual Cultures; the Center for Design and Material Culture; the Division of the Arts; the Center for the Humanities; and the Institute for Research in the Humanities, as well as make sure of the outstanding collection of the Kohler Art Library; the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection; and the Chazen Museum of Art.

The successful candidate will contribute to an inclusive, fair, and equitable environment that fosters engagement and a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students, and members of the broader community.

Responsibilities:

Successful applicants will teach graduate and undergraduate classes of various sizes, direct independent studies and/or conference courses, mentor students, conduct scholarly research, and provide service to the department, college, university, and academic community nationally or internationally. The normal teaching load in the Departments of Art History and African Cultural Studies is four courses per academic year, two courses in one semester and two courses in the other, one course per semester in Art History and one course per semester in African Cultural Studies. Successful candidates will be expected to develop and regularly teach a large-enrollment introductory course in Art History.

In addition to teaching, tenure-track faculty are expected to demonstrate productivity in scholarly research and to complete departmental & university service. The successful candidate, as a member of the College of L&S, will proactively contribute to, support, and advance the college's commitment to diversity among all aspects of their teaching, research, and service.
